Self Catering in Brittany

There are so many to choose from depending on personal preference and again the first port of call should be the tourist information office and local advertising. During the year most villages hold a variety of festivals and you will be very unlucky if you cannot find one during your stay – the best are those with an open air feast followed by fireworks.

Local Breton culture and folklore abounds and traditional entertainments constantly crop up. Religion plays a big part in Brittany especially the further west you go and pardons (relgious parades) are colourful and sometimes moving occasions followed by the imbibing of vast quantities of cider and dancing. The impressive traditional dancing is not such a feature any more though it can still be seen in July at Quimper at the Abadenn Veur. .

Most pardons are held during the afternoon but the one at Guingamp takes place at night. Unfortunately the traditional pardon season is mostly in the winter months. Below is a list of the annual, larger festivals that are reasonably close but do check at the tourist information office for details of others and to confirm opening times :

Bain sur Ost	Son et Lumiere of history of Brittany (only in July and a couple of hours drive)
Dinan	Festival of Music – modern and classical in historic setting – Mid July. Includes international Celtic harp competition. 99 54 20 20 Fetes des Remparts – medieval festival in old town– grand spectacle.
Dinard	Fete de la Jeunesse et de la Mer – late August
Guingamp	La St Loup – festival of Breton Dance and Folk Music, mid August
Lamballe	Traditional folklore festival - second Sunday in July.
Lannion	Organ festival Fridays in July and August
Monterfil	Music competition mid June
Perros-Guirec	Fete des Hortensias, mid August.
Ploezal-Runan	Festival de la Roche-Jague – exhibitions and cultural events, June – September.
Redon	La Bogue d`Or – golden husk festival, October.
Rennes	Festival of traditional arts, late April Tombees de la Nuit – the main summer event in the city – a week of Breton music,dance and theatre, late June early July.
St Brieuc	Le mai Breton Traditional festival in May.
St Malo	Fete folklorique du Clos Poulet – traditional event in July Festival de la Musique Sacree – religious music, July - August
