The
grocer in the village has most of the basic goods but obviously
at a price and we normally do our bulk shopping at the Carrefour
hypermarket at Langeux. There are useful small supermarkets in Broons,
Merdrignac, Super U and Intermarche respectively

Most
of the local villages have boulangeries and fun can be had finding
a favourite especially as local taste seems to often veer toward
the very well cooked! St Malo, Dinard and St Brieuc have full-size
supermarkets (usually sign-posted as Centre Commercial). Much more
fun are the local markets, usually only in the mornings, and they
obviously vary in size according to the village but you may want
to try :

At present with the strong exchange rate you can get many bargains especially in the supermarkets. Electrical goods for example seem to be at least 25% cheaper than in Britain, C.Ds £3-4 cheaper and of course wine is dangerously cheap.
If you like single malt whisky then there are normally one or two famous brands that are so cheap you wonder if they are genuine – last time I looked for example there was Lagavulin at £13 a bottle.

Clothes are quite attractive in that the supermarket brands look a little different from our own and similar trainers for example are also cheaper as is perfume which is encouraging now that the duty free concession looks like it is finally going.
Most fun though is probably to be had looking around the brocantes for a bargain or in the boutiques in the centre of most towns.

Melanie
reminds me that you can even get to Paris in three hours from
Lamballe on the T.G.V. from Broons with a change which might
be an attractive option.
Remember food shops tend to open early, while boutiques often don`t open until 10 a.m. and everything tends to close between 12 and 2.00 p.m.and then remain open until 7.00 p.m. or so especially in the season.
Most shops are closed on a Monday.
